As you should expect, our granola is heavy in fruits and each fruit has its own medicinal properties. To make Granola a standard base of oats and wheat flour and to make Granola bars, they are usually bonded by honey so the medicinal value on this page will be based on those elements alone. The medicinal properties are too vast to document here but has been well documented throughout history in all cultures.
- High Cholesterol:
Oats, via their high fiber content, are already known to help remove cholesterol from the digestive system that would otherwise end up in the bloodstream.
- Cardiovascular Disease:
Antioxidant compounds unique to oats, called avenanthramides, help prevent free radicals from damaging LDL cholesterol, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, suggests a study conducted at Tufts University and published in The Journal of Nutrition.
- Stabilize Blood Sugar:
Studies also show that beta-glucan has beneficial effects in diabetes as well. Type 2 diabetes patients given foods high in this type of oat fiber or given oatmeal or oat bran rich foods experienced much lower rises in blood sugar compared to those who were given white rice or bread.
- Allergies:
Honey being created from the collection of pollen from various flowers, helps the body build immunities to these pollens in collaboration with the antibiotic characteristics of honey.
- Ulcers and other Gastrointestinal disorders:
Recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis possibly due to the Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-fungal properties that actually create hydrogen peroxide.
- Colitis:
Antioxidants in honey have even been implicated in reducing damage to the colon in colitis.
